Mobile, Ala., June 30, 2021 – ST Engineering today celebrated the 30th anniversary of its commercial aircraft maintenance operations at the Mobile Aeroplex at Brookley, U.S. The Mobile facility, Mobile Aerospace Engineering (MAE), established in 1990, obtained its FAA 145 Repair Station Approval for airframe maintenance on January 17, 1991, and commenced operations soon after in the same year.

In a ceremony attended by Mobile Mayor Sandy Stimpson, Mobile Airport Authority President Chris Curry, as well as former Mayor Mike Dow and former Airport Authority Executive Director Bay Haas, MAE recognized its longest standing employees, some of whom have been with the company from the very beginning. With more than 1,100 employees split between its aviation facilities in Mobile and Pensacola, and an annual payroll of over $50 million, MAE is a key contributor to the region’s economy.

Beyond direct employment, MAE indirectly stimulates economic activities in airport logistics, education and training, housing, transport and many other areas. It actively gives back to the local community, participating in various local charities and donation drives as well as sponsoring initiatives such as the Mobile Area Education Foundation and the Worlds of Opportunity Career Expo.

“MAE has been a critical piece of our economic fabric in the City of Mobile for the last 30 years,” said Sandy Stimpson, Mayor of Mobile. “Their success is a true testament to the company’s leadership and Mobile’s skilled workforce. There is no question that MAE has helped pave the way for a thriving aerospace industry in the City of Mobile. We look forward to the many more years of success to come.”

Built on the site of the former Brookley Air Force Base, MAE has steadily expanded its operations in Mobile over the years by adding additional hangars to arrive at its current capacity of eight widebody and two narrowbody bays, covering one million square feet. In 2018, its operations extended to a brand-new, state-of-the-art facility at nearby Pensacola International Airport, which was built with sustainability in mind to reduce the carbon footprint of the business, and has the capacity to accommodate two large widebody or six narrowbody aircraft.

With leading airlines among its long-term customers, MAE performs heavy maintenance and repair work on nearly all aircraft types for the nation’s carriers. The facility is also a renowned center for aircraft modifications, including the conversion of passenger aircraft into cargo aircraft. The anniversary celebratory event also marked MAE’s 6,000th aircraft redelivery milestone.

“We are proud of the longstanding success MAE has cultivated with the Mobile community over the last three decades. The hard work and dedication of our workers are the foundation of this strong legacy, and one we are committed to continue,” shared Tom Vecchiolla, President and CEO of ST Engineering North America.

Jeffrey Lam, President of Commercial Aerospace, ST Engineering, said, “MAE is able to celebrate such a significant milestone today thanks to the loyalty of its many longstanding customers, the support from the local community and authorities, and the hard work and contributions of its dedicated employees. Together with ST Engineering’s commitment to continue growing its business in Mobile and Pensacola, this gives us confidence that MAE will rise above the current challenges faced by the global aviation industry, and see many more good years ahead.”
